Wim Blom (1927 - 2021) was born in Germiston, South Africa and received his MA FA from Wits University thereafter teaching both at Wits and the Johannesburg School of Art. Trained as an art historian he held the post of Research Curator at the National Gallery of Canada. After leaving the museum world Wim Blom dedicated himself exclusively to painting, living in Italy and Spain. His works are currently housed in numerous public, corporate and private collections around the world.
His timeless paintings and drawings resonate with people, so much so that when they purchase one, the tend to want to keep it; they enjoy having it around and never tire of it's image. Very few of his pieces come up for auction.
This rare, early work by Wim Blom titled 'Still Life with Fruit' exudes a particular quality that is familiar throughout his artistic narrative, that of an invitation to meditate. It could be said that Blom's actual process of painting involves a prolonged form of meditation in which a delicate balance is struck between perception and conception.
'To study Wim Blom's paintings is to enter a beautifully conceived secret world of still life and interiors. This uncluttered world is subtly structured and balanced. In it's cool, ordered stillness it seems infinitely less ephemeral than the fleeting world of apperances from which it borrows objects, shadows, sensations of colour, form, proportion and light and shade. It is a gently luminous world. The scale is small and intimate and there is a rare sense of tone, and an element of mystery pervades the work.' Mark Glazebrook on Wim Blom in 'The Beauty of Stillness'
